On my last visit to Berlin several years ago, I bought a pair of cotton briefs here in a vivid, multicolored jewel-tone stripe. They cost more than I had ever spent on any one piece of underwear, but I liked them so much I couldn’t resist. They’ve been worn at least once per week ever since. After at least 150 and maybe as many as 200 washings, the garment has kept its color and shape, and the fabric shows no signs of fraying or pilling. What I thought was an extravagance has actually turned out to be a bargain. The owner designs all the garments and at least some of the fabrics himself. He also assists customers in the shop, which is attractive and well worth a visit.
