The Best Gay Saunas and Bathhouses in the USA

American bathhouses are often seen as pale imitations of their European counterparts. There’s a reason for this: most bathhouses were closed in the 80s on government orders. Those dark days have passed but many American bathhouses haven’t recovered from the forced shutdowns. San Francisco's ban on gay bathhouses was only lifted in 2001: no major new bathhouse has yet to make use of San Fran's more favorable legal environment.

That being said, there are some excellent - even world-class - gay bathhouses in the US. We’ve visited them all - tough gig - and gathered together a list of our favorites.

Steamworks (Chicago, IL)

Located in the heart of Chicago’s Boystown, Steamworks is a well-known institution among the city’s gay community. This modern and upscale bathhouse offers a wide range of amenities, including private rooms, a large steam room, a whirlpool, and a fully equipped gym. 

Steamworks is known to be a place where you can get action with Windy City hotties. It’s especially busy at weekends. It’s also known to be one of the better-maintained gay saunas in the US. Many Travel Gay users have visited this sauna and left positive reviews.

Club Orlando (Orlando, FL)

Club Orlando is a spacious and well-maintained bathhouse located just a short drive from the city’s popular tourist attractions. The facility features a large outdoor pool, hot tubs, a steam room, and private rooms.

Orlando is a huge tourist destinations so there’s a lot of passing trade, as well as a large LGBT+ population. When you’re done with the more wholesome tourist activities Orlando is famous for, this bathhouse is a good spot to visit.

Club Aqua Miami (Miami, FL)

Club Aqua Miami is open 24 hours, a rarity among US bathhouses. It has an outdoor pool which is a rarity among bathhouses on either side of the pond. There’s also a small gym. If you hook up with someone you can entertain them in one of the private cubicles.

Club Houston (Houston, TX)

For those in the South, Club Houston is a standout choice. This spacious bathhouse features an outdoor pool, multiple hot tubs, a steam room, and private rooms for rent.

Club Houston, located near Downtown and Montrose, offers a clean and safe space for men to hookup. It’s a big space so you may need to wander around to find the action. For the voyeurs, there’s a viewing area above the showers and jacuzzi.
