Athens is not a beach city in the way the Greek islands are, but it doesn't need to be. The Athens Riviera, the stretch of coast running south from the city along the Saronic Gulf, puts clear water and rocky swimming coves within easy reach of the center, and a couple of them have long been the daytime gathering spots for gay locals and visitors.
The two best known are Limanakia and Pikpa. Both are rocky naturist beaches with deep, clear water rather than sandy resort stretches, and both draw a mainly gay male crowd through the summer.
Neither is heavily developed, so come prepared with water, sunscreen, and shoes you can climb over rocks in. Below we cover how to reach each one and what to expect when you arrive.

Pikpa Beach

Pikpa is a gay and naturist beach on the Athens Riviera at Voula, around 18km south of the city center. That makes it noticeably closer and easier to reach than Limanakia, roughly a 30 to 40 minute trip by car or tram, which is its main draw for anyone short on time.
The beach is a series of rocky coves with clear, deep water, sitting just along from the organized paid section of Voula Beach. There is no sand to speak of and little development, so visitors lay out on the rocks and swim in from the edge. If you want sunbeds, showers, and a beach bar, the serviced part of Voula is right next door.
The crowd is predominantly gay men, and Pikpa is the more discreet, low-key option of the two main Athens gay beaches. It is quieter and more secluded than Limanakia, which remains the busier daytime social spot.
Getting there: Take the tram to Voula, then it is around a 30-minute walk to the beach. By car or Uber it is about 18km from central Athens along the coast road. Access can be awkward, as much of the headland is fenced off by private beaches, so allow time to find the path down.
