Beaux

The Missouri Mule ( now Beaux) first opened its doors in 1935 by Hans K. Lund (see photo) following the purchase of the property which was at that time a soda bar. Eight years later in 1953 Hans would sell the bar to Berkeley police officer Wayne Knutila who would once again sell the bar a decade later in 1963. the bar was quickly closed for a short time expanded,rebranded and officially reopened its doors later that same year as one of San Francisco's first openly gay bars securing the Mules place in San Francisco's Gay History. Since then the bar has changed owner's & names owners several times but continues to remain proud icon of the Castro and the LBGTQ community
